The fire-resistant hydraulic fluid for foundries, steel mills, and granite quarries

Castrol Anvol is the fire-resistant industrial hydraulic fluid range specified for any hydraulic system in line-of-sight to molten metal, open flame, or high-fire-risk conditions where conventional mineral oil presents unacceptable insurance and HSE risk. The chemistry split matters. Anvol SWX 46 is a water-free polyolester (ISO 12922 HFDU) that Castrol rates to 500 bar with anti-wear protection comparable to a standard mineral oil — it is the grade for high-pressure mill hydraulics, and it is the one that carries Factory Mutual Category 1. Anvol WG 46 is a water-glycol (ISO 12922 HFC) rated to 200 bar; the water fraction is what gives water-glycol its fire performance, and Castrol specifies WG 46 for foundry and steel-mill service — pour-deck hydraulics, ladle-tilt actuators, mill-stand hydraulics. Seal compatibility is where fire-resistant changeovers go wrong: confirm the elastomer specification against the product data sheet before the fluid goes in, and treat a seal spec written for a different fire-resistant chemistry as unverified. For Karimnagar and Warangal granite-quarry operators running hydraulic packs under heat and dust, and for Visakhapatnam mill-stand and mould-oscillation hydraulics, we supply both grades across AP and Telangana with water-content monitoring on the HFC and seal-compatibility review on the changeover. Castrol India's Anvol fire-resistant fluid portfolio covers the ISO 12922 fire-resistant fluid classifications.

Castrol Anvol Fire-Resistant Fluids Range

Complete Castrol coverage across the castrol anvol fire-resistant fluids family.

Anvol SWX 46 — Polyolester, ISO 12922 HFDU

Water-free polyolester fire-resistant hydraulic fluid, ISO VG 46, viscosity index 180, with anti-wear additives. Castrol rates it for high-pressure hydraulic systems up to 500 bar (7,200 psi) in mills, with a very high flash point and anti-wear protection comparable with standard mineral oils. Anvol SWX 46 fulfils the requirements of Factory Mutual Category 1. This is the grade that replaces Anvol PE, no longer part of Castrol's India industrial range, in high-pressure service.

Anvol WG 46 — Water-Glycol, ISO 12922 HFC

Water-glycol fire-resistant hydraulic fluid, ISO VG 46, viscosity index above 200, with good anti-wear properties. Castrol rates it for pressures up to 200 bar and specifies it for foundries and steel mills. The water fraction is integral to the fire resistance, so it has to be monitored and maintained in service.

Standard Mineral (alternative for low-fire-risk)

Where the fire-risk assessment shows conventional mineral hydraulic oil is acceptable, Castrol Hyspin AWH may be a more cost-effective choice — see our Hyspin page. Anvol is specifically for service where mineral cannot be used.

Standards: ISO 12922 HFDU (SWX 46) and HFC (WG 46). Factory Mutual Category 1 applies to Anvol SWX 46 — if an insurer or an FM Global schedule names a fire-resistant class or an approved fluid, confirm the certificate against the grade you are actually running. Figures above are from Castrol's India industrial product catalogue; only the properties stated on the individual product data sheet are binding, and we will send the current data sheet with any quotation.

Moving from Anvol PE to Anvol SWX 46

Anvol PE was a phosphate-ester fluid (ISO 12922 HFDR). It is no longer part of Castrol's India industrial range. Plants still running it need a route out, and the replacement for its high-pressure role is Anvol SWX 46 — a polyolester HFDU rated to 500 bar and meeting Factory Mutual Category 1.

Both fluids are water-free, so the pressure capability and pump-life behaviour that made a phosphate ester preferable to a water-glycol still hold. What changes is the base chemistry, and that is where the changeover work sits:

Seals and hoses. Phosphate esters and polyol esters do not behave the same way with elastomers. A seal specification that was written for Anvol PE does not transfer to SWX 46 — it has to be confirmed against the SWX 46 data sheet before the fluid goes in. This is the single most common way a fire-resistant changeover goes wrong.

Paints, coatings and filter media. Reservoir internal coatings and filter elements selected for phosphate ester should be checked the same way.

Flushing. Drain, flush and verify residual old fluid is below what the data sheet permits. Do not top up a phosphate-ester charge with SWX 46 and expect the mixture to behave as either fluid.

The fire class on paper changes. Anvol PE was HFDR; Anvol SWX 46 is HFDU. Both are ISO 12922 fire-resistant classes, but if your insurer, your FM Global schedule or an OEM hydraulic-system specification names the class explicitly, that document needs re-issuing against HFDU.

Consider whether you still need an anhydrous fluid at all. If the system runs below 200 bar and sits in line-of-sight to molten metal, Anvol WG 46 may be the better answer: the water fraction gives water-glycol its fire performance, and Castrol specifies WG 46 for exactly that foundry and steel-mill duty.

Send us the system pressure, the reservoir temperature, the seal material and the current fluid, and we will come back with the grade and the changeover steps in writing.

Application Areas by Industry

Where Castrol Anvol Fire-Resistant Fluids ship from our Hyderabad warehouse — by industry segment + application profile.

Iron & Steel Foundries

Anvol WG 46 for foundry pour-deck hydraulics, ladle-tilt actuators and mould-handling press hydraulics. Castrol specifies WG 46 for foundry duty, and the water fraction is what carries the fire performance in a leak.

Steel Rolling Mills

Anvol WG 46 for hot-strip-mill stand hydraulics and slab-mill mould-oscillation hydraulics, which Castrol names as steel-mill service. Anvol SWX 46 where system pressure runs above the 200 bar WG 46 is rated for. The integrated-steel installed base across eastern and southern India.

Glass Plants — Container & Float

Anvol WG 46 for IS-machine plunger hydraulics, gathering-station hydraulics and float-glass tin-bath gear. High-temperature glass-melt environment makes mineral hydraulic oil unacceptable.

Granite Quarry & Stone Processing

Anvol WG 46 for granite-quarry hydraulic systems where dust ingress, heat and the intermittent nature of quarry operation elevate fire risk. Karimnagar / Warangal granite-belt installations.

Aluminium Smelter & Casting

Anvol WG 46 for aluminium-smelter pot-tending and casting-mould hydraulics. The molten-aluminium environment is exactly the line-of-sight duty a water-glycol is chosen for.

Coal Handling Plants

Anvol WG 46 for coal-handling-plant conveyor-transfer and stacker-reclaimer hydraulics. Coal dust plus heat is the fire-risk profile that puts a water-glycol into these installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from maintenance + procurement buyers sourcing Castrol Anvol Fire-Resistant Fluids through Vasundhara Specialities.

Which Anvol grade for an iron-foundry pour-deck hydraulic system?

Anvol WG 46. Castrol specifies this water-glycol grade for foundries and steel mills, and the water fraction is what suppresses fire propagation in a leak onto hot metal. It is ISO VG 46 and rated to 200 bar. Confirm the seal and hose materials against the product data sheet before changing over from mineral oil, and plan for water-content monitoring once it is in service.

When should I use Anvol SWX 46 instead of Anvol WG 46?

Pressure is the clearest divider. Castrol rates Anvol WG 46 to 200 bar and Anvol SWX 46 to 500 bar, so anything above 200 bar goes to SWX 46. SWX 46 is also the answer where a water-containing fluid is unacceptable, and where the anti-wear performance needs to be comparable with a standard mineral oil. Anvol WG 46 is the choice for foundry and steel-mill duty inside its pressure range, which is the service Castrol names for it. If an insurance schedule requires Factory Mutual Category 1, that approval sits with SWX 46.

What happened to Anvol PE, and what replaces it?

Anvol PE was a phosphate-ester fluid, ISO 12922 class HFDR. It is no longer part of Castrol's India industrial range. For its high-pressure role the replacement is Anvol SWX 46, a water-free polyolester rated to 500 bar that meets Factory Mutual Category 1. Both are anhydrous, so the pressure capability carries over, but the base chemistry changes and the seal, hose, coating and filter specification has to be re-confirmed against the SWX 46 data sheet rather than inherited from the PE specification. Flush rather than top up. If the system runs below 200 bar and sits in line-of-sight to molten metal, Anvol WG 46 may suit it better.

What is the maximum operating temperature for Anvol WG 46?

Water-glycol fluids lose water faster as bulk temperature rises, so the working limit is set by how much water loss the system can tolerate between checks rather than by a single headline number. Take the maximum continuous temperature from the Anvol WG 46 product data sheet and treat it as binding. Where reservoir temperature is high enough that water loss becomes the governing maintenance item, the water-free Anvol SWX 46 removes that problem entirely — which, along with pressure, is the usual reason to move off a water-glycol.

How is water content maintained in Anvol WG 46 during operation?

Water content drifts down through evaporation and through reservoir breathing, and the fire resistance goes with it — which is why this is the one maintenance item a water-glycol cannot be left without. Sample on a regular interval, compare against the water content the Anvol WG 46 data sheet specifies, and top up with deionised water to bring it back into range. Vasundhara Specialities supports periodic water-content sampling as part of the supply relationship, and we will set the interval with you against your reservoir temperature and duty cycle.

Which Anvol fluid carries Factory Mutual approval?

Anvol SWX 46. Castrol states that Anvol SWX 46 fulfils the requirements of Factory Mutual Category 1. If your property insurer, your FM Global schedule or an OEM hydraulic specification calls for an FM-approved fire-resistant fluid, SWX 46 is the grade to quote against, and we will supply the current product data sheet and batch documentation with the order. Do not carry an approval across from a fluid you used to run — the certificate has to name the grade actually in the system.

Can Anvol be supplied for emergency hydraulic-fluid replacement?
