Compressor Oil Selection for Indian Industry: Screw, Piston, Vane and Vacuum Duty
Compressor type decides the oil before anything else. Castrol Aircol CM is the mineral anti-wear oil for reciprocating and rotary-screw air compressors in ISO VG 68 and 100. Aircol SR is the PAO synthetic in ISO VG 32 and 46 for air and screw duty where discharge temperature or cold starting is the constraint. Aircol SN 100 is a dicarbonic-acid-ester oil that Castrol specifies for piston air compressors. Aircol HV 100 is a narrow-boiling-range mineral oil for mechanical fine and high vacuum pumps — a different machine with a different failure mode, not a compressor oil application.
Start with the machine, not the oil
The single most useful thing a maintenance engineer can do before ordering compressor oil is write down what kind of compressor it actually is. Rotary screw, reciprocating and piston, vane, and vacuum pump are four different lubrication problems that happen to share a word.
A rotary screw floods the air end with oil, so the oil is doing sealing and cooling work as well as lubrication, and it spends its life in intimate contact with hot compressed air. A reciprocating machine lubricates a crankcase and cylinder walls, with the oil exposed to discharge-valve temperatures that can be considerably higher than anything the screw sees. A vacuum pump is a different problem again, where what matters is how much of the oil evaporates.
Getting this wrong is expensive in a way that shows up late. Carbon on discharge valves, varnish in the separator, an air end that will not make pressure — none of these appear the week the wrong oil goes in.
The ISO 6743-3 classes, briefly
ISO 6743-3 classifies compressor lubricants by application, and the codes turn up on OEM charts often enough to be worth recognising. DAA and DAB cover reciprocating and rotary air compressors at moderate and severe duty. DAG and DAH cover rotary machines in more demanding service. DAJ covers reciprocating machines where discharge temperature is high enough that ordinary mineral formulations struggle.
The classes are useful as a shorthand between you and the OEM. They are not a substitute for the lubricant chart in the service manual, and they do not tell you which Castrol grade to buy — that is a mapping exercise, and it is one we would rather do with your machine list in front of us than guess at.

Two things in that table are worth pausing on. Aircol SN 100 is an ester rather than a mineral oil or a PAO, and Castrol names it specifically for piston air compressors — it is not a general-purpose grade to be reached for casually. And Aircol HV 100 carries no anti-wear additive package, because a vacuum pump is not asking for one; it is asking for a narrow boiling range.
The catalogue also notes synthetic coverage for multicellular compressors at higher viscosity grades. If that is your machine, ask us to confirm the exact grade against the current data sheet rather than assuming the number.
Discharge temperature is the variable that decides most arguments
Oxidation rate roughly doubles for every ten degrees of sustained temperature rise. That single fact explains most of the difference between a compressor whose oil looks fine at its scheduled change and one whose separator is varnished.
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the compressor room is frequently the problem rather than the compressor. A machine rated for a comfortable ambient sits in a corrugated-roof enclosure with poor cross-ventilation, and by late April the intake air is already warm before the compressor does any work on it. The oil sees the consequence.
Where sustained discharge temperature is the binding constraint, a PAO synthetic such as Aircol SR holds oxidation stability better than a mineral grade in the same duty. Where the room is genuinely temperature-controlled and the duty is moderate, mineral Aircol CM is the sensible and economical answer. The honest version of this decision is made on your measured oil temperature, not on a rule of thumb.
Cold starting, and why it matters more than it sounds
Most of India does not have a winter problem. Some plants do — unheated sheds in the interior, early-morning starts after a weekend shutdown, and any installation where the compressor sits outdoors. Pour point is the published figure to look at: Aircol SR is stated at minus 54 degrees Celsius against minus 36 and minus 33 for the CM grades.
The practical point is not that Indian plants see minus 54. It is that a very low pour point and a high viscosity index together mean the oil is closer to its working viscosity sooner after a cold start, and the first minutes after start-up are when a screw element is least protected.
Oil carry-over, condensate and what happens downstream
Compressed air leaves the machine carrying some oil and a great deal of water. In a humid coastal plant — Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, the whole Godavari belt — the receiver drain is doing serious work through the monsoon.
Two oil properties matter here and neither is viscosity. Demulsibility decides whether water separates cleanly at the receiver drain or emulsifies and stays in circulation. Low volatility decides how much oil aerosol reaches downstream filters, the condensate you have to dispose of, and in the worst case the product itself.
That last point is not theoretical for pharmaceutical and food plants. Where compressed air touches product — tablet-press air, capsule filling, packaging lines — the question of what is in the air stream stops being a maintenance matter and becomes a quality matter. It is worth deciding deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the previous supplier left in the store.
Vacuum pumps: the machine nobody specifies for
Vacuum pumps are the most consistently neglected machines on an Indian plant lubrication schedule. They are usually bought as part of a process package, they rarely appear on the compressor maintenance list, and when the oil is changed it is often changed to whatever compressor oil is open in the store.
The failure this produces is subtle. The pump does not seize; it simply stops reaching the vacuum level it used to, because light fractions in a general-purpose oil evaporate under vacuum and raise the achievable base pressure. Production notices a slower cycle long before maintenance notices an oil problem.
Castrol Aircol HV 100 exists for this duty: a mineral oil with a narrow boiling range for mechanical fine and high vacuum pumps. If you run rotary-vane vacuum pumps in a pharmaceutical, electronics or laboratory setting and nobody has ever specified their oil, that is a short conversation with a real payback.
What actually sets the drain interval
Take the interval from the compressor OEM schedule. That is the figure your warranty is written against and it is the right starting point. Then let oil analysis tell you whether your installation is better or worse than the assumption behind it.
Discharge temperature, air-end filtration, water ingress and duty cycle move the real figure far more than the choice between two good oils does. Trending total acid number, viscosity drift and water content is what distinguishes a compressor that can safely run longer between changes from one that should be changed sooner than the book says. We support periodic sample analysis as part of the supply relationship, and the point of it is evidence rather than a headline number.
Changing over: the checks worth doing first
Compressor oils are not universally miscible, and an ester, a PAO and a mineral oil are three different chemistries. Before any changeover:
- Check the OEM chart firstSome machines specifically require a synthetic from new, and running a mineral grade in them is a warranty problem regardless of how well it performs.
- Confirm seal and hose compatibilityTake this from the product data sheet for the oil you are moving to, not from the specification written for the oil you are leaving. Different base chemistries behave differently with elastomers.
- Drain and flush rather than top upResidual old fluid in a separator and cooler is enough to compromise a changeover. Verify the residual is below what the data sheet permits.
- Change the separator at the same timeA separator element loaded with the old oil will keep feeding it back into the new charge, and it is the cheapest part of the job.
- Sample earlyTake a baseline sample after the first few hundred hours of the new charge. It is worth far more than a sample taken at the scheduled change, because it tells you whether the installation is behaving as expected while you can still act on it.

Can I run a compressor oil in a vacuum pump?
Not reliably, and this is one of the most common substitutions we see. A mechanical vacuum pump needs an oil with a narrow boiling range so that light fractions do not evaporate off and spoil the ultimate vacuum the pump can reach. A general compressor oil is not formulated for that. Castrol Aircol HV 100 is the vacuum-pump oil in the range: mineral, ISO VG 95, viscosity index 100, with the narrow boiling range that mechanical fine and high vacuum pumps require. If a pharmaceutical or electronics plant is chasing a vacuum level it used to reach and no longer does, the oil is worth checking before the pump is.
What actually sets the drain interval on a compressor oil?
The OEM service schedule sets it and oil analysis confirms or extends it.
